We are thrilled to have Kirsten Neuschafer join us from Prince Edward Island

to talk about her preparations for participating in the 2022 Golden Globe Race.

Kirsten has been the Skipper of Skip Novak’s high latitude expedition sail-boat “PELAGIC” and is now the first female entrant in the Golden Globe Race. She purchased Minnehaha, a Cape George 36 in Newfoundland and in December(!) single handed to Prince Edward Island where the boat has been hauled for an extensive refit in preparation for the Race.

The Golden Globe Race 2022 is a solo, non-stop, unassisted circumnavigation. This “retro race” is based upon the first solo circumnavigation that took place in 1968 and won by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. In order to stay true to the original race, boats for 2022 are all older designs, no bigger than 36 feet. Modern navigational technology, like GPS, is not permitted. Instead Kirsten will depend upon her skills in celestial navigation and dead reckoning. The route is France, down the Atlantic, east-about the Southern Ocean, and back up the Atlantic to France - an approximate distance of 30,000 nautical miles and anywhere from 7 to 9 months or more at sea.
