Members of the Boston Station,

We are in unprecedented times. Our normal way of life has been disrupted by a set of circumstances I don't believe any of us ever thought we'd see in our lifetimes.  I have no doubt that many of our Station members have been personally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and to you I say that we are thinking of you and wish you a speedy recovery.  For those of you who have lost loved ones, I am truly sorry.

Among the many aspects of our lives that have been altered is the springtime ritual of boat maintenance, launching and commissioning.  We must balance our longing to return to our boats with the real danger posed by being out in public during this crisis.  Most states in New England are under some sort of stay-at-home order, many with non-essential businesses shuttered.  Many boat yards have restricted access to owners while the yard crews work to launch boats and keep on schedule where possible.

Events: The CCA's leadership has rightly chosen to cancel all Club events through at least May 15th.  That is dangerously close to our anticipated May 23rd Spring Gam.  While we still hope to have this wonderful spring-opener in Marion and Padanaram, we will be making a decision on whether it can go forward within the next few weeks.  On a lighter note, there is no indication at this point that our summer cruise in New Hampshire and Maine should not go on July 24-31.  Sign-ups are open, and so far we have 14 boats registered.  Remember that we will be forced to limit the final number to about 35 boats, so please sign up early.  (Note: because down payments for the venues are not necessary until much closer to the date, we should have some flexibility with refunds, should the cruise be cancelled for any reason.)

New Leadership for BOS/BUZ: Due to some prescient thinking, outgoing Post Captain Larry Hall handed over the reins to Paul Bushueff in February, one month early, at what turned out to be the last pre-COVID-19 BUZ luncheon.  Paul has served as Post Secretary and Treasurer for the past two years, and we look forward to his leadership.  Joining him in his old roles is Jeff Gonsalves.  We are grateful to Larry for two terrific years in the Post!

Safety Moment: Station Safety Officer has posted a new Safety Moment on the Station homepage which can be found here. This one discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on racing and cruising in New England.  It is well worth a read.

Join a Post:  Did you know you could join one of the Station's three Posts on the website?  The Posts are geographic subsections of the Station which hold events for members located close to each other.  To join a Post, just navigate to www.cruisingclub.org, and click on "Member Login' in the upper right-hand corner.  Once logged in, choose "Member Links" -> "My Information".  At the top of the next screen, choose "Edit" and select "Membership" from the list of choices on the left.  There you will find a block for "My Post." Select it, and start typing in Gulf of Maine, Buzzards Bay or Narragansett Bay.  Click on the name of the Post when it pops up below and then select "Save" at the bottom of the screen.  That's it!  Once selected, the Post will receive notification of the selection and add you to the mailing list.

Once again, we are in uncharted waters with the developing COVID-19 situation.  I am optimistic we will come out of it in time for a vibrant New England boating season, and I look forward to seeing many of you this summer on the water.  Until then, please be safe and stay healthy.

James
