Born in Chicago, moved to Hinsdale, IL, in 1939, summered at Lake LaBelle, WI, where I purchased my first sailboat in 1943. Taught sailing at Scout camp, became an Eagle Scout and then joined Sea Scouts, sailing on Lake Michigan. Graduated from Hinsdale Township High School in 1947 and was selected for Naval ROTC Program, which included summer cruises in the Pacific (Pearl Harbor), Pensacola and Norfolk. Commissioned in 1951 and served in Korean War aboard heavy cruiser before reporting to Submarine School. Graduated with distinction before reporting aboard USS Tiru in Japan. Earned dolphins in 1954 and entered USNR. Began business career, started work on nuclear power project at Electric Boat. Sailed as foredeck hand aboard SEAFLOWER in 1958 Bermuda Race, the first of twelve. Served as design project engineer for USS Seawolf, USS Patrick Henry, USS Thomas Edison, and USS Alexander Hamilton Class and as Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Submarine Division 3-11. Promoted to Captain, USNR. Transferred to GD Corporate Headquarters as staff assistant to General Counsel. Left GD to become Vice President, Defense Contracts, of Blaw-Knox Corporation. Promoted to Vice President, Industry and Government Relations, White Consolidated Industries in Washington, D.C. ,retiring from that position in 1994 to go sailing. Sailed FANTASIA, a Baba 35, from Annapolis to England, Spain, Madeira, the Canaries, Cape Verdes, Martinique, Puerto Rico and home. Served as Rear Commodore, USA(SE) of the Ocean Cruising Club for six years, and as Secretary of CCA Chesapeake Station. Now serving as Historian for Chesapeake Station.
