An outstanding presentation awaits us on March 3-- our own Beau Vrolyk will speak about making MAYAN fast.
Having spent years as a cruising boat from Maine to the Caribbean, S. America, Central American, Tahiti, and Hawaii, MAYAN had come to rest in Santa Barbara where she continued to serve David Crosby on cruises to the Channel Islands. The Vrolyk family took on the task of caring for MAYAN in 2014 and discovered that Beau simply could not resist the urge to race her. In her initial outing, at the sporty age of 67, she managed a respectable mid-fleet finish at the America’s Schooner Cup in San Diego.
The hook was set.
A program of continuous improvement in every area has continued to this day. MAYAN is on the hard getting a new centerboard of the same profile, but sporting a far better foil shape, just the latest improvement in a lovely old boat. But, the most interesting advances were made by the crew. With the able help of fellow CCA members Synthia Petroka, Skip Allen, Stan Honey, Sally Honey, and Bill Lee, along with a handful of retired Volvo Ocean racers and a few other wonderful friends, we have started to regain what our great grandfathers must have known well: How to make a schooner sail fast.
As always, there is certainly more to learn. Beau will review some of the anomalies of schooner sailing, lessons learned a century ago and rediscovered by puzzled sailors today.
Doors will open for conversation at 4:30 p.m.. The meeting will be called to order at 5:00 p.m..
