Wayfinding for the Future: Indigenous Stewardship and the Resilience of the Pacific Ocean

Across the Pacific, the future of coral reefs, wildlife, and people depend not on distant solutions, but on the strength of local stewards. In this talk, Dr.Lida Teneva will share how Indigenous and community-led ocean management, backed by generations of knowledge and modern science, is one of the most effective tools we have for ocean health and climate resilience. Drawing on work with island communities and local NGOs in Micronesia, now expanding into Polynesia, the talk explores why these proven solutions endure only when the organizations behind them are strong, visible, and well supported. For sailors, this story will feel familiar: Pacific Island navigators crossed vast oceans guided by stars, currents, and deep ecological knowledge, sustaining both people and sea along the way. Today’s stewards carry that same tradition of wayfinding, charting a course toward resilient reefs and thriving coastal communities in a changing ocean.

Lida Teneva, PHD, MBA has worked extensively exploring our global ocean on ships around the world. She is a Board Trustee of Mary G. Jameson Foundation, is on the Advisory Board of Global Conservation and will tell you about many of her interesting adventures
