Celebrating the tercentenary of the Royal Cork Yacht Club and the coast of Ireland

Mid-July, 2020

July 2020 sees the Royal Cork Yacht Club, located in Crosshaven near Cork city on the South shores of Ireland, celebrate its tercentenary – 1720 to 2020. This 300th anniversary of the first sailing club will celebrate with a worldwide representation of yacht and cruising clubs. The main events of interest to our fleet are the Great Gathering with its anniversary day of July 12 in Cork harbor “where it all began” and a cruise in company along the SW coast of Ireland. The course follows the shoreside hiking and scenic driving route also known as the Wild Atlantic Way.

The Great Gathering

The Wild Atlantic Way Cork300 Cruise in Company and Parade of Sail festival are shaping up to be one of the great yachting events of the year. See attachment. The race fleet continues to grow into the hundreds with race boats coming by sail and transport ship for Cork Race Week. The Cruise fleet is expected to be of 80+ from early notifications. The classic fleet, included in the first part of Cork Race Week, will be led off by two of Herreshoff’s great schooners, Elena and Mariette. The expansive harbor of Cork will be quite the spectacle on Sunday July 12 when all fleets will form a parade of sail and a sail-past the old clubhouse under original 1720 Water Club of Cork Sailing Rules for review and salute. We have 14 CCA skippers participating with crews and will be well represented. There are six yachts completing transatlantic passages, a further three extending their NW Europe cruises and a charter fleet of four.

The Cruise in Company from Crosshaven to Dingle, July 12-22, will be a great coming together of cruising sailors from may parts. The coast provides some of the most scenic shores and anchorages for wonderful sailing and social occasions – or hide-aways for interludes of peace and quiet. The Royal Cork is setting up and coordinating the overall ten-day program with gatherings in a few key anchorages. We, the CCA participants, will fly our flag with a GAM followed by dinner at the hotel on Valentia Island’s Knightstown Harbor, July 20. This area was where the first transatlantic telegraph cable was laid from in 1858, history and scenery to enjoy.  The associated cruising clubs of Ireland, England, Scotland and the Ocean Cruising Club are represented and will host parties to complement the Royal Cork events along the Wild Atlantic Way cruise route. The Irish Cruising Club have invited us to join in their many summer events including those just prior to the cruise in Cork.
