Kick off 2026 with your fellow CCA members at the Sausalito Cruising Club.
Our speaker will be Michael Stocker, highly recommended by Mary Crowley. He'll be talking about sounds in the ocean
"Michael is the founding director of Ocean Conservation Research, a scientific research and policy development organization focused on understanding the impacts of, and finding technical and policy solutions to the growing problem of human-generated ocean noise pollution. He is a technical generalist conversant in physics, acoustics, biology, electronics, and cultural history, with a gift for conveying complex scientific and technical issues in clear, understandable terms".
About the presentation:
Our technological society needs lots of energy - for transportation, manufacturing, indoor climate control, lighting, shipping, and computing. Until the last couple of decades, this energy came from burning fossil fuel, or releasing sequestered water through hydro-electric generators. More recently wind turbines and solar panels have added to our energy resource compliment.
While these energy sources have a long history on land, they are increasingly intersecting our relationships with the ocean and impacting ocean habitats in various ways; from acoustical surveys of the ocean floor and geological substrates, operations and servicing noises, and the tragic accidents that occasionally happen such as oil spills and vessel collisions.
Marine Bioacoustician and technical generalist Michael Stocker will look at these impacts through the historic arc of energy extraction from the ocean, through the filter of our National and International energy strategies.
