Robert A.Van Blaricom, for more than 35 years of lively San Francisco Station historian reports, chronicles of members who have taken their "Final Voyage," book reviews, and a series of articles about adventures on Sea Bear and Misty he and Jane shared in Hawaii, Alaska, the South Pacific, the Northwest, the Intercoastal Waterway, and the Great Lakes.
Charles H. Vilas Literary Prize
In memory of Charles H. Vilas, member for 50 years, assistant editor and editor of the Cruising Club News for 20 years, club historian for 10 years and winner of the Nye Trophy, the Governing Board established in 1991 the Charles H. Vilas Literary Prize.
A commemorative plaque is to be awarded by the Governing Board to a member who makes an outstanding contribution to Voyages (formerly the Cruising Club News) in the form of an article or articles, photographs or chronicle. The prize may be awarded as often as annually, but need not be made each year.
John E. McKelvy, Jr. and Nancy McKelvy for outstanding contribtion as editors of Cruising Club News since June 1994. With talent, discipline, humor and grace, with a sense of history and of people, they have entertained, enlightened, and honored us by their literary efforts.
Peter M. Passano for chronicles of his long distance cruising on steel cutter, Sea Bear, from California to Australia, and single-handed from New Zealand to the Falklands. His description of storms makes you grip your chair, and his writing has just the right mix of humor and salinity.
Sandy and Sidney Van Zandt for wonderful tales of 38 foot Sequel's circumnavigation 1990-96, including descriptions of underwater companions seen through the Lexan window below, and exasperating moments in the Red Sea dealing with head seas and difficult people.
Larry and Maxine Bailey for the installments of their travels aboard their 41-foot sloop, Shingebiss II. They developed their own unique style, often beginning an article with an appropriate whimsical piece of poetry.
Bill and Pam Kellett for the chronicles of their adventures on board Islay, cruising the waters of Northern Europe, the British Isles and the islands of the Norwegian Sea.
Dan and Mimi Dyer for their many years of creating the pages on "The Sailing We Do."
Bob and Mindy Drew for outstanding contributions to the CC News. Together, they brought the News from a simple news sheet to a fine, informative magazine.
Daniel B. Conron for his contributions to the CC News, in particular his editorship since 1986 of the feature "Introducing New Members."
Robert. S. Carter, archeologist, author and sailor, for his many contri-butions to the CC News, including a pictorial guide to the Azores.
