The 2024 winner of the Diana Russell Award for Innovation is Nigel Calder, of Damariscotta, Maine. Calder receives this recognition for his extensive knowledge, research, development, and production of advanced electrical systems for yachts.

The Diana Russell Award for innovation was established in 2022 and named for a yacht designer and yacht systems developer who was one of the first women to join the CCA. The award recognizes innovation in sailing design, methodology, education, training, safety, and the adventurous use and enjoyment of the sea. Calder’s achievements exemplify the spirit of this award, and the CCA is honored to acknowledge his contributions.

Calder is renowned in the marine industry for his pioneering work and dedication to improving the safety, efficiency, and reliability of yacht electrical systems. He has played a pivotal role in the development of standards for boat electrical and propulsion systems for the American Boat and Yacht Council in the United States and for similar organizations and authorities in Europe.

A well-known author, Calder has written several books for cruising sailors maintaining their systems and navigating the remote parts of the Caribbean. He frequently contributes articles to marine publications and serves on their editorial boards. Calder is also the designer, inventor, and co-developer of efficient marine electrical charging systems. Noteworthy for this award is the innovative "Integrel" power-generating system that uses excess diesel engine power for large battery charging, eliminating the need for a generator onboard yachts. Calder and his family cruise widely; he is an expert sailor who enjoys being at sea.
