This February, approximately 60 CCA members, under the leadership of Post Captain Barney J. Baker embarked on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Rockport Marine, one of Maine’s most renowned wooden boat builders and classic yacht restoration yards.
Hosted at Rockport Marine's waterfront boatyard at the end of Main Street in Rockport, Maine, the visit offered CCA members a firsthand look at the artistry and innovation behind some of the nation’s most captivating wooden boat projects. Sam Temple, President of Rockport Marine, discussed the origins of the company and the challenges and triumphs behind their captivating new builds, intricate restorations, and custom designs, sharing in-depth stories brimming with humor and insight.
Among the standouts of the day were the elegant 95-foot OUZEL, the sleek Rockport Marine-designed R37, and several other exceptional vessels that blend traditional aesthetics with modern performance. The tour also highlighted Rockport Marine’s collaboration with Mystic Seaport Museum on the restoration of the legendary schooner BRILLIANT.
Special guest Shannon McKenzie, Vice President of Watercraft Preservation and Operations, from Mystic Seaport Museum, joined the tour to discuss the ongoing preservation efforts and answer audience questions. BRILLIANT, often dubbed the “traveling ambassador” of Mystic Seaport and that has been serving as an offshore classroom in Mystic Seaport Museum’s education programs for nearly 70 years.
The afternoon was rich with spirited conversation, insightful questions, and a deep appreciation for deep experience and ‘nothing is impossible’ mindset that defines Rockport Marine’s approach.
